천마총 금제 관식(1978-1) · 天馬塚 金製 冠飾(1978-1)

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCheonmachong Tomb is Hwangnam-dong Tomb No. 155 in Gyeongju. It was excavated in 1973, yielding a gold crown, bracelets and many other precious relics, together with a painting of a heavenly horse (cheonma), which is how the tomb came to be called Cheonmachong. The gold diadem ornament from Cheonmachong Tomb was found at the head end outside the coffin, on top of the lid of a box containing burial goods. The ornament is 23cm in height and 23cm in width. At its centre is a round part shaped like a bird's head, and below it, at the left and right shoulder positions, is a pair of wing shapes rising upward. The body descends vertically, narrowing gradually, with the end finished in a rounded form. Two leaf-shaped holes are pierced in the head section, and five leaf-shaped holes run from the left and right wings down to the body. The lower, shield-shaped section is undecorated, but above it about 150 round ornaments are strung together in a single row. There are traces of the whole piece having been folded lengthwise in half, and there is a single nail hole at the bottom, presumably for fixing it in place, though its precise use remains unclear.
