This is a glass cup excavated from Hwangnamdaechong Tomb, a Silla-period tomb in the area of King Michu's mausoleum in Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju. Hwangnamdaechong Tomb consists of two mounds joined together in a gourd shape, running north to south. The Glass Cup from the North Mound of Hwangnamdaechong Tomb is 7 cm in height and 10.5 cm in diameter at the rim, and was excavated from the northern mound. The rim flares broadly outward to form a horizontal line, while the body is shaped like a rice bowl, widening slightly toward the base. At the bottom is a raised foot, connected by a short neck to a trumpet-shaped base. The glass is of fine, transparent quality, brown in colour, with a wood-grain-like pattern running throughout. Apart from slight damage to the bottom of the foot, it survives in complete form. Various kinds of glass vessels have been found in Silla tombs in Gyeongju, but a piece like this is unique, the first of its kind seen. Judging from the shape and pattern of the cup, it is presumed not to be a Silla product but to have come from the West.
