Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Gold High-footed Cup from the North Mound of Hwangnamdaechong Tomb is a high-footed dish (gobae) found in Hwangnamdaechong Tomb, a Silla tomb of the Three Kingdoms period located in the Michu-wangneung area of Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju. Hwangnamdaechong Tomb consists of two mounds joined together in a gourd shape, one to the south and one to the north. This gold high-footed cup, 10 cm high, 10 cm in mouth diameter and weighing 169 g, was found in the north mound. It follows the typical form of earthenware high-footed dishes, with a hemispherical body set on a trumpet-shaped foot, but the addition of decoration and the use of gold suggest that it was made as a burial good rather than for practical use. The rim is rolled outward, and seven leaf-shaped ornaments are attached with gold thread through two holes each. The foot is relatively small and divided into upper and lower tiers, each pierced with staggered rectangular openings, in the typical style of Silla high-footed dishes. Although partly crushed and damaged, it is a valuable example of a gold high-footed cup, a type rarely found.
