The gold diadem ornament from the South Mound of Hwangnamdaechong Tomb was found in Hwangnamdaechong, a Silla tomb of the Three Kingdoms period located in the King Michu Royal Tomb district of Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju. Hwangnamdaechong consists of two mounds, one to the south and one to the north, joined together in the shape of a gourd. This ornament was found in the southern mound of Hwangnamdaechong and measures 45 cm in height and 59 cm across the tips of its wings. It is made up of three gold plaques: the central plaque has three projecting points at the top, giving the whole piece the shape of the character 山 ("mountain"). Its lower part gradually narrows to form a V shape, and wing-shaped gold plaques were attached to the left and right of this central plaque with small rivets. Small circular decorations were fixed all over the front, but the part at the base of the central plaque meant to be inserted into a cap bears no decoration. The edges of the ornament are finished with small punched dots. The central plaque is folded slightly inward along its vertical centre line; the pointed lower end suggests it was meant to be inserted into something, but whether it formed part of a cap worn in everyday life remains uncertain.
