Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krReport on Imjin War by Choe Hui-ryang – List of Victory Reports (Cheopbo Seomok) is a set of documents in which Choe Hui-ryang (1560–1651), who served as magistrate of Heungyang (present-day Goheung County, Jeollanam-do) during the Imjin War in 1598, the 31st year of King Seonjo, reported to Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the Naval Commander of Jeolla Province, and to the governor of Jeolla Province, his victories over the Japanese invaders. Choe Hui-ryang passed the military service examination, and when the Imjin War broke out he served as a seonjeon-gwan, a royal messenger officer. During the second Japanese invasion (the Jeongyu War) he served under Yi Sun-sin and achieved many military successes, later being honoured as a wonjong gongsin, a merit subject of secondary rank. The documents, originally scattered separately, were mounted by his descendant Choe Gi-jeong, who backed them with 19 sheets of paper behind the list to form a folded album. On the cover of this album Choe Gi-jeong gave it the title "Original Album of Irong's Reports on Defeating the Japanese", and attached plain or red paper covers to each document to make the contents easier to classify. The contents are battle reports written on the spot, and in their margins they preserve intact the format of official documents of the time, in which a superior officer would write his reply. They also record the full course of major victories over the Japanese invaders, bringing to light valuable facts not found in other records. This is regarded as an extremely rare source for examining the format of official documents of the period.
