Stone Seated Buddha in Samneunggye Valley of Namsan Mountain, Gyeongju
경주 남산 삼릉계 석조여래좌상 · 慶州 南山 三陵溪 石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone seated Buddha, carved from granite, stands on the ridge to the left of Samneunggye Valley. The head is covered with small, snail-shell-shaped curls, and a large topknot-shaped protuberance sits near the crown. The face is full and round, and the ears are rendered short. The robe, worn over the left shoulder only, is carved with folds rendered simply and beautifully. The waist is slender, and the seated posture is stable and well balanced. The pedestal consists of upper, middle and lower tiers: the upper tier is carved with an ornate lotus design, the octagonal middle tier bears simple eye-shaped niches carved on each face, and the lower tier is a plain octagonal block. The lotus design and the eye-shaped niches carved on the octagonal lotus pedestal, together with the dignified and stable posture of the figure, suggest that this is a work of the Unified Silla period, made in the eighth or ninth century.
