Iron Seated Vairocana Buddha of Hancheonsa Temple, Yecheon
예천 한천사 철조비로자나불좌상 · 醴泉 寒天寺 鐵造毘盧遮那佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Iron Seated Vairocana Buddha of Hancheonsa Temple, Yecheon, is an iron statue 1.53 m tall, its halo and pedestal now lost. Its elegant yet composed face, sturdy body, dignified seated posture and resilient legs display an outstanding skill rarely seen in Buddha statues of the late Unified Silla period. The robe covering the left shoulder falls from the shoulder in folds that look relatively vigorous and are naturally rendered, but the folds at the arms and both knees show a more formalised, stylised treatment. With its elongated upper body, flat bridge of the nose and notably prominent philtrum, the statue shows a tendency towards abstraction, and it can be counted among the finest of the iron Buddha statues popular at the time.
