Stone Ice Storage in Hyeonpung, Dalseong
달성 현풍 석빙고 · 達城 玄風 石氷庫

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a storehouse built of stacked stone for storing ice. It is constructed elongated on a north-south axis and faces south, with its entrance set on the ridge side, its back to a stream. All of the stone used is granite, and from the outside it resembles an ancient tomb mound. The entrance was formed by shaping long stones into a square door frame, with the rear wall filled in with stone to block outside air. The exterior was built up by stacking stone and compacting it with clay, then piling earth on top. The walls and ceiling were built of well-dressed stone; the ceiling has four rainbow-shaped stone arches, with long, large stones laid between them to form an overall arched vault. Two ventilation openings for airflow are set into the ceiling, each fitted with a cover against rainwater, and the floor is paved with flat stones, with a drainage channel at the centre. At the time, ice storehouses were not built in every village, so it is notable that such a stone ice storage was built in the small town of Hyeonpung. During repair work around the storage in 1982, a construction monument recording its building date was discovered, revealing that it was built in 1730, the sixth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon.
