Rock-carved Buddha Triad in Sinam-ri, Yeongju

This rock-carved Buddha stands beside a road amid paddy fields in Sinam-ri, Isan-myeon, Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Buddhas were originally carved on all four faces of the rock, but today only the Buddha triad retains a recognisable form. The principal Buddha has a bare head topped by a large, topknot-shaped bun, and an oval, well-rounded face. The robe, covering both shoulders, falls in thick, soft curves from the abdomen down over the legs. The right hand is raised to chest level, and the left hand is lowered diagonally over the knee. The form of the face and the treatment of the robe folds show an early style, closely resembling the Rock-carved Buddha Triad and Seated Buddha in Gaheung-dong, Yeongju. The two attendant bodhisattvas on either side both have shoulders very narrow in proportion to their bodies, with no modelling of bodily curves, and are generally plain, without ornamentation. The principal Buddha and the two attendant bodhisattvas all have a round head halo carved with a flame pattern. Although small in scale, the work as a whole shows a rich sense of volume combined with a soft expression, and is thought to have been made in the early Unified Silla period.
