Stone Seated Buddha of Heukseoksa Temple, Yeongju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This seated stone Buddha was excavated after having been buried near Heukseoksa Temple and is now enshrined there; the pedestal on which it sits and the halo, which represents the light radiating from its whole body, stand separately beside it. The face has an appropriate sense of volume and carries a gentle smile overall. The body appears stable, but the shoulders are drawn in slightly and the width of the knees has narrowed, features characteristic of the late Unified Silla period. The thin robe covering both shoulders forms natural folds and flows down in a fan shape in front of both feet. The pedestal is octagonal; its upper stone is missing, with only the middle and lower stones remaining, and the lower stone is decorated with a lotus pattern. The halo distinguishes a head halo from a body halo, depicting lotus and cloud patterns, with a flame pattern carved in relief around its edge. Judging from the decorative treatment of the pedestal and halo, this is a valuable work that carries on the style of seated stone Buddha statues of the 9th century.
