Seven-story Stone Pagoda in Sango-ri, Sangju
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This pagoda is said to stand on the site of a temple called Janggaksa, though no reliable record confirms this. It has the typical form of a seven-storey body set on a two-tier base: earth was tamped down to form a platform, its perimeter marked out with stone edging, and the pagoda built on top. The base is made of several slabs, and the body of the pagoda tapers upward at a consistent ratio from storey to storey. The first-storey body stone is made of three stones, with pillar-shapes carved at the four corners and a door-shaped carving on the east face. From the second storey upward, the roof stone and body stone of each storey are each cut from a single stone. The seemingly thin roof stones slope gently, with a pronounced upward curve at the four corners; the underside supports number five tiers up to the fifth storey and four tiers on the sixth and seventh storeys. At the top, only the square pedestal stone that supported the finial remains. The pagoda is notable for the lightness of its body, and its grand scale together with the fine balance of its overall proportions suggest that it is an early Goryeo work carrying on the stone pagoda style of the Unified Silla period.
