The central teaching of this text is hoesam-gwiil sasang, the doctrine that the Three Vehicles ultimately converge into and are unified in the One Vehicle. It holds that the many teachings expounded by the Buddha are merely expedient means towards enlightenment, and that in the buddha-lands of the ten directions there exists only the one Buddha-vehicle, thereby proclaiming that the path to buddhahood is open to everyone. The title of this work appears in the Samguk yusa, and commentaries on it are recorded in Uicheon's Newly Compiled Comprehensive Catalogue of the Buddhist Canon of All Schools, showing that it had already circulated widely from the Three Kingdoms period onward. This edition is a printing, made in 1240, the 27th year of King Gojong of Goryeo, of an annotated version of the Lotus Sutra with commentary by Jiehuan of the Song dynasty.
