The Buljo samgyeong (Three Sutras of the Buddha and Patriarchs) is one of the early Buddhist scriptures transmitted from India to China, translated into Chinese by Kasyapa Matanga and Dharmaratna of the Later Han dynasty; it sets out the essential teachings of Buddhism in forty-two chapters. It is a woodblock print on mulberry paper (hanji) measuring 26.3 cm in height and 17.2 cm in width. This volume also contains the Bulyugyogyeong, translated by Kumarajiva of India, and the Wisan gyeongchaek, written by Lingyou of the Tang dynasty; together with the Sutra in Forty-Two Sections, these three texts make up the Three Sutras of the Buddha and Patriarchs. A colophon at the end of the book records that it was published in 1384, the tenth year of King U of Goryeo, by the monks Jibong and Jido together with a patron surnamed Kim, and that Yi Saek wrote the account of its publication. The calligraphic style shows that it was re-carved from a Song-dynasty original, and the fine carving of the characters and the clarity of the printing suggest that it is an early impression taken soon after the woodblocks were carved.
