The Jungyong juja hongmun was imported from the Yuan dynasty in 1371, the 20th year of King Gongmin of Goryeo, and printed from woodblocks in Korea. It is a work by Zhu Xi of the Song dynasty, written in a question-and-answer format addressing various points of interpretation in the Doctrine of the Mean (Jungyong), one of the Four Books. It clearly retains many characteristics of the Yuan-dynasty edition, with finely carved characters and clean, clear printing. Two copies survive today: one held in the library of Korea University, and the other in a private collection. A colophon at the end of the book records that it was carved and printed at Jinju-mok, the seat of local government in Jinju, in the seventh month of the fourth year of Hongho (1371). As a locally published edition from the Goryeo period, it is a valuable resource for bibliographical research. "Hongho" (洪虎) here refers to the Hongwu (洪武) era name of the Ming dynasty; the character 武 (Mu), part of Hongwu, was replaced with 虎 (Ho) to avoid writing the personal name of King Hyejong of Goryeo, whose personal name was Mu (武) — a practice known as naming taboo. Such substitutions are commonly found in Goryeo-period editions.
