The Donginjimun sayuk was compiled by the Goryeo-period literatus Choe Hae (1287-1340). His collected works, the Jolgo cheonbaek, contain a "Preface to Dongin mun" and a "Preface to Dongin saryuk". According to the "Preface to Dongin mun", Choe Hae selected poetry and prose by Korean writers and grouped them under the names Ochil (poetry), Cheonbaek (prose) and Saryuk (parallel prose). The "Preface to Dongin saryuk" separately discusses matters of format and style relating to the Saryuk section. However, in the Donginjimun as it survives today, the Ochil and Cheonbaek sections have almost entirely disappeared, and only the Saryuk section remains. This book brings together writings from the Silla and Goryeo periods, and comprises Volumes 1 to 6 in two bound books. There was also once a similar compilation, the Dongguk jigam by the Goryeo scholar Kim Tae-hyeon, but it no longer survives. In the colophon at the end of Volume 5, the characters Geon (健), Mu (武), Un (運), Yo (堯) and Chi (治) — the personal names of successive Goryeo kings — appear with strokes omitted or replaced by other characters; this is a feature commonly found in Goryeo editions. In Volume 1, the preface and table of contents, and the upper right corners of the first two sheets, are partly damaged. The woodblocks for this edition were carved in 1355, the fourth year of King Gongmin of Goryeo, but the printing itself appears to date from the early Joseon period.
