Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra, often abbreviated as the Diamond Sutra, is the fundamental scripture of the Jogye Order in Korea and is the most widely read sutra after the Heart Sutra. The Commentary on the Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra (The Diamond Sutra) is an accessible explanation, by the Song-dynasty monk Hyejeong, of the Geumgang banyagyeong soron chanyo written by the Tang-dynasty monk Jongmil; its two volumes, upper and lower, are bound together as a single book. It was carved on wood and printed on mulberry paper, measuring 28.4 cm in height and 16.5 cm in width. The cover is dark blue, with the title written in gold within a double-lined rectangle in the upper left corner. A colophon at the end of the book, written by the eminent late-Goryeo monk Hwaam, shows that it was recarved and printed at Cheongnyongsa Temple in Chungju in 1378, the fourth year of King U of Goryeo, based on an original published in Yuan China in 1339. While the Geumgang banyagyeong soron chanyo itself is relatively well known, this further commentary on it survives as a rare edition regarded as an important source.
