The Documents of the Namwon Yang Clan comprise seven old documents dating from 1355, the fourth year of King Gongmin of Goryeo, to 1591, the 24th year of King Seonjo of Joseon. At their core are two hongpae, red certificates issued on passing the state examination: one given to Yang I-si in 1355, the fourth year of King Gongmin, and another given to his son Yang Su-saeng in 1376, the second year of King U, on passing the munkwa civil service examination. In addition, there are gyoji, royal certificates of examination success or appointment, recording that Yang Gong-jun passed the saengwon examination, a preliminary civil-service qualifying examination, in 1508, the third year of King Jungjong, and later also passed the munkwa examination; that the saengwon Yang Hong passed the munkwa examination in 1540, the 35th year of King Jungjong; and that Yang Si-seong passed the saengwon examination in 1591, the 24th year of King Seonjo. There is also a sarong gyoji, a letter of appointment, dated 1559, the 14th year of King Myeongjong, appointing Yang Hong as magistrate of Cheongdo. These documents are important materials for the study of hongpae and baekpae, red and white examination certificates, from the late Goryeo to early Joseon periods. In particular, the hongpae issued to Yang I-si and Yang Su-saeng are recorded as issued by royal command, rather than as gyoji as in Joseon-period certificates, and they record the posts and names of the examiners, making them extremely valuable materials for research into the form of such documents and into the state examination system of the Goryeo period.
