The Folding Screen of Heonjong garye jinhado depicts the scene of King Heonjong's (r. 1834-1849) wedding to Queen Hyojeong. Each panel measures 115 cm wide and 51 cm high and is painted in colour on silk. King Heonjong's first queen, Queen Hyohyeon of the Kim clan, died in the ninth year of King Heonjong's reign (1843), and in the tenth month of the following year he held his wedding ceremony with Queen Hyojeong; this screen, made to commemorate the occasion, consists of eight panels in all. The first panel carries a congratulatory text written by Jo Byeong-gu, the yemun jejang official in charge of the ceremony, and the eighth panel records the rank, name and ancestral seat of the officials of the Seonjeongwan, the royal bodyguard office. Panels two to seven depict the wedding ceremony itself along with views inside the palace, including Injeongjeon Hall of Changdeokgung Palace, rendered in an orderly yet splendid manner. As it faithfully preserves the appearance of a nineteenth-century royal wedding, it is valuable not only as a painting but also as a historical record, and it remains in a very good state of preservation.
