The Printing Woodblocks of Buddhist Scriptures in Buseoksa Temple, Yeongju are woodblocks at Buseoksa Temple carved with three versions of the Daebanggwangbul hwaeomgyeong (Avatamsaka, or Flower Garland, Sutra): the 40-volume Jeongwon edition, the 60-volume Jin edition, and the 80-volume Ju edition. The Daebanggwangbul hwaeomgyeong, often shortened to Hwaeomgyeong, is the fundamental scripture of the Hwaeom school and, together with the Lotus Sutra, is the scripture that had the greatest influence on the establishment of Korean Buddhist thought. The Jeongwon edition is the 40-volume translation by Prajna, the Jin edition the 60-volume translation by Buddhabhadra, and the Ju edition the 80-volume translation by Siksananda. These woodblocks total 634 in all, and have the unusual format of 34 characters arranged per line. They are presumed to have been re-carved around the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries from a Buddhist scripture imported from Khitan, and are extremely important as the only surviving set of woodblocks in the Khitan-edition lineage. Their value is further enhanced by the fact that they are held at Buseoksa Temple, which was founded by Master Uisang, founder of the Hwaeom school in Korea, where Hwaeom thought was developed.
