Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuljo yeokdae tongjae (Biographies of Great Buddhists Since the Birth of Sakyamuni Buddha) records, in chronological order, the biographies of learned and virtuous monks from the birth of Sakyamuni Buddha down to 1334, the third year of the restored reign of King Chungsuk of Goryeo. This copy is a woodblock print on mulberry paper; the complete work, originally in twenty-two fascicles, is here bound into seven volumes, measuring 28.2 cm in height and 16.8 cm in width. A colophon written by Kim Su-on (a brief note recording the contents of the book and the circumstances of its publication) states that it was printed and issued in 1472, the third year of King Seongjong of Joseon. Grand Queen Dowager Insu had twenty-nine kinds of Buddhist scripture published, including the Lotus Sutra, in order to pray for the repose of the souls of King Sejo and King Yejong and for the long life of Grand Queen Dowager Jeonghui, King Seongjong and Queen Gonghye; this book is one of those twenty-nine. A note on the inside of the cover of fascicle 22 records that the book, handed down through successive generations from a deceased teacher, had been kept by the monk Mukdam, and had now passed to the abbot of Yonghwasa Temple. As the only complete copy retaining every one of its fascicles without exception, it is valuable material for studying the woodblock-printing techniques of the early Joseon period and the Buddhist faith of the royal house.
