월인석보 권1~2 · 月印釋譜 卷一~二

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWorin seokbo is a Buddhist canon compiled in 1459, the fifth year of King Sejo, by combining Worin cheongangjigok and Seokbo sangjeol. Seokbo means a chronicle of Sakyamuni Buddha, that is, an account of his life. When Queen Soheon, of the Sim clan, died in 1446, the twenty-eighth year of King Sejong, King Sejong ordered his son Grand Prince Suyang (later King Sejo) to compile a Buddhist text in Hangeul, drawing on Buddhist scriptures, to pray for her soul's repose; this became Seokbo sangjeol. In 1447, the twenty-ninth year of King Sejong, King Sejong read Seokbo sangjeol and composed a hymn of praise for each two-line passage; these became Worin cheongangjigok. As a complete set of Worin seokbo does not survive today, the full number of volumes cannot be confirmed. Worin seokbo, Volumes 1-2, is a combined edition of the first two volumes of Worin seokbo, printed in 1459, the fifth year of King Sejo. The book measures 22.8 cm in width and 33.8 cm in height. Volumes 1 and 2 were re-carved at Huibangsa Temple in 1568, and this edition served as the base text for that later carving. Its contents run from canto 1 to canto 29 of Worin cheongangjigok, preceded at the front of the book by Hunminjeongeum, followed by the preface to Seokbo sangjeol and the preface to Worin seokbo.
