Worin seokbo (Episodes from the Life of Sakyamuni Buddha), Volume 23
월인석보 권23 · 月印釋譜 卷二十三

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWorin seokbo is a Buddhist canon compiled in 1459, the fifth year of King Sejo, by combining Worin cheongangjigok (Songs of the Moon's Reflection on a Thousand Rivers) with Seokbo sangjeol (Episodes from the Life of Sakyamuni Buddha). "Seokbo" means a chronicle of Sakyamuni Buddha, that is, his biography. When Queen Consort Sim, the wife of King Sejong, died in 1446, the 28th year of King Sejong's reign, Sejong ordered his son Grand Prince Suyang, later King Sejo, to compile a Hangeul translation drawing on Buddhist scriptures in order to pray for her afterlife; the result was Seokbo sangjeol. In 1447, the 29th year of King Sejong, Sejong read Seokbo sangjeol and composed a hymn of praise for each two-line passage; these hymns became Worin cheongangjigok. A complete set of Worin seokbo does not survive today, so the total number of volumes originally produced cannot be confirmed. This copy of Volume 23 is the edition first printed during the reign of King Sejo, comprising one volume in one binding, and measures 21.5 cm in width and 31.2 cm in height. The printed text is missing portions at the beginning and end, so only leaves 16 to 106 currently remain, and the whole volume has been backed with lining paper and repaired. It contains 28 verses, numbers 497 to 524, of Worin cheongangjigok, together with the corresponding commentary passages from Seokbo sangjeol.
