Three-story Stone Pagoda at Geodonsa Temple Site, Wonju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This pagoda stands before the site of the Golden Hall at the old temple grounds of Geodonsa, its three-story body raised on a two-tier platform. The lower tier of the platform has pillar shapes carved at the four corners and in the centre of each face, and its base stone, middle stone and top stone are each made up of four separate slabs. On the upper tier, plain unadorned stones were set on the north and south sides, while stones carved with a pillar shape in the centre were fitted on the east and west sides; seen from the north and south, the thickness of the east and west stones thus appears naturally as a pillar. The body of the pagoda has a single stone for the main body and a single stone for the roof at each storey. The roof stones, each with a five-tiered base, are thick, with the four corners of their sloping faces forming a curve; the eaves run straight but lift lightly at the ends, revealing the style of the Unified Silla period. Only the square capstone that supported the crowning finial remains at the top of the pagoda; the lotus-shaped jewel finial now placed on it is a recent addition. Judging from the two-tier platform structure, the carved pillar shapes and the five-tiered roof-stone bases, the pagoda is presumed to date from the 9th century. At a well beside a house on the temple site stands a worship stone, said to have been moved from beside the pagoda, where incense was burned during rites performed in front of it.
