Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Shurangama Sutra is also known in abbreviated form as "Daebuljeong Suneungeomgyeong" or simply "Neungeomgyeong." Its central teaching is not merely to understand the Buddha's words intellectually but to personally realise them and thereby gain their power, and it is a scripture that monks are required to study in the course of their training. This transcription in gold on indigo-tinted paper renders the Shurangama Sutra as translated in ten volumes by the Tang-dynasty monk Banjamilje; what survives today corresponds to Volume 7 alone. It takes an accordion-fold form that can be opened out like a folding screen, measuring 81.4 cm in height and 11.1 cm in width when folded. The cover bears the title and an elaborate floral design, and the main text is carefully written in gold characters; the last two folds, having been lost, were rewritten to complete the volume. Although no record of its production survives, the calligraphic style of the cover and text suggests it was made around the fourteenth century.
