Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Surangama Sutra is also known by the shorter titles Daebuljeong Suneungeomgyeong or Neungeomgyeong. Its central teaching is that the Buddha's words should not merely be understood intellectually but personally experienced and realised. The sutra comprises ten fascicles in total and was an essential scripture in the training of Buddhist monks. This is an eonhae (a vernacular translation into Hangeul) of volumes 2 and 5 of the Surangama Sutra, rendering into Korean the Suneungeomgyeong yohae, an annotated edition translated by Bhagavaddharma of Tang China and annotated by Jiehuan of Song China. King Sejo added the Hangeul grammatical glosses (gugyeol), the monk Sinmi, given the honorific title Hyegakjonja, marked the punctuation, and Han Gye-hui, Kim Su-on and others carried out the translation. This edition was printed in 1461, the seventh year of King Sejo's reign, at the Gyoseogwan (Royal Publications Office) using the Eulhae metal type, and survives as an incomplete set of only two volumes, the second and fifth fascicles, out of the original ten.
