This is an eonhae (a vernacular translation into Hangeul) of the Suneungeomgyeong yohae, an annotated edition of the Surangama Sutra translated by Bhagavaddharma of Tang China and annotated by Jiehuan of Song China. King Sejo added the Hangeul grammatical glosses (gugyeol), the monk Sinmi, given the honorific title Hyegakjonja, marked the punctuation, and Han Gye-hui, Kim Su-on and others carried out the translation. This edition was printed in 1462, the eighth year of King Sejo's reign, from woodblocks carved at the Gangyeongdogam (the office established in 1461 to publish Buddhist sutras) to correct errors found in the 1461 metal-type edition. The printing dates appear to differ from volume to volume: three volumes, fascicles 5, 8 and 9, are thought to have been printed in 1462; three volumes, fascicles 1, 4 and 4, during the reign of King Seongjong (1470-1494); and five volumes, fascicles 2, 3, 6, 7 and 10, some time after King Seongjong's reign. There are eleven volumes in total: nine are held at the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, Seoul National University, and two, fascicles 2 and 4, at the Seoul National University Central Library.
