The Beobeo yangnok of Buddhist Monk Mongsan is a collection of beobeo — records of the Buddha's words and teachings that served as a guide for monks in their practice — and it circulated widely in Korea during the Joseon dynasty. This copy combines six sermons by the Yuan-dynasty monk Mongsanhwasang Deogi with one sermon by the Goryeo monk Naong Hwasang Hyegeun, bound together as a single volume. Mongsanhwasang Deogi had close ties with the Goryeo monks State Preceptor Hyegam, Manhang, and State Preceptor Bogam, Honggu, and had a great influence on the Korean Buddhist world from the end of Goryeo onward. This edition of the Mongsanhwasang beobeo yangnok (eonhae) was annotated with reading marks and translated into Hangeul by Hyegakjonja Sinmi of Joseon; his name is recorded on the title page of the first leaf as "translated and annotated by Hyegakjonja Sinmi." It was carved onto woodblocks and printed on somewhat inferior paper, measuring 30.9 cm in width and 22 cm in height. A postscript (a brief note added at the end of a book summarising its contents and the circumstances of its production) written by Kim Su-on at the end of the book records that it was published in 1472, the third year of King Seongjong. Copies printed at Gyeonggyeong Dogam — the office set up by the royal court in 1461, the seventh year of King Sejo, to translate Buddhist scriptures into Hangeul and print them — in 1467, the thirteenth year of King Sejo, carry Sinmi's name, but another copy printed under Grand Queen Dowager Insu in 1472 lacks his name; this shows that the first leaf of this book was taken from an earlier printing and pasted in. Although the book is made up of two printings from different periods on somewhat inferior paper, it is a valuable copy that is well preserved and finely printed.
