Volume 5 of the Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra (The Diamond Sutra) with Commentaries by Three Masters is part of a Hangeul translation, begun by order of King Sejong, of the Diamond Sutra with Three Commentaries - a text translated by Kumarajiva of the Later Qin dynasty and annotated by the Tang-dynasty monks Zongmi, Zongjing, and Gihwa - which was completed and published in 1482, the thirteenth year of King Seongjong. It is a movable-type edition, each character individually carved and set into a fixed frame for printing; Volumes 1 and 5 each form a separate book, and both measure 38.7 cm in height and 25.3 cm in width. The main text is printed in large characters using Jeongchukja type, while the commentary is printed in medium and small characters using Eulhaeja type. Jeongchukja was cast in 1457, the third year of King Sejo, and takes its name from the jeongchuk year of its casting; Eulhaeja was cast in 1455, the first year of King Sejo, based on the calligraphy of Gang Hui-an, and likewise takes its name from the eulhae year of its casting. This book is notable both as evidence that the publication of Buddhist scriptures was carried on as a royal undertaking from the reign of King Sejong through to that of King Seongjong, and, because its Hangeul orthography mixes different notational forms, as a valuable resource for research into the early Hunminjeongeum.
