Volume 1 of the Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra (The Diamond Sutra) with Commentaries by Three Masters is a Hangeul translation of three of the five commentaries gathered in the Geumganggyeong ogahae (Five Commentaries on the Diamond Sutra) - those by the Song-dynasty monks Yefu and Zongjing, and by the eminent early-Joseon monk Gihwa. It is a movable-type edition produced in 1482, the thirteenth year of King Seongjong, by order of Grand Queen Dowager Jaseong, consort of King Sejo: the large characters of the main text were printed with Jeongchukja type, and the medium and small characters of the commentary with Eulhaeja type. A movable-type edition is one in which each character is individually carved and set into a fixed frame for printing; an edition printed in a jeongchuk year is called a Jeongchukja edition, and one printed in an eulhae year is called an Eulhaeja edition. According to writings by Han Gye-hui and Gang Hui-maeng at the end of the book, King Munjong and King Sejo had translated the text by order of King Sejong but had not finished proofreading it, so Grand Queen Dowager Jaseong had the eminent monk Hakjo proofread it again, after which 300 copies were printed. This book is notable both because the publication of Buddhist scriptures was carried on as a royal undertaking from the reign of King Sejong to that of King Seongjong, and because its Hangeul orthography mixes different notational forms, making it a valuable resource for the study of Hangeul.
