The Album of Paintings from Byeongjin Year, by Kim Hong-do, gathers landscape paintings, genre scenes and other works by the late Joseon painter Kim Hong-do, pen name Danwon (1745–?). Kim Hong-do excelled equally at landscape, figure, Daoist-immortal and genre painting; he opened new ground in genre painting and established a distinctive style of his own in landscape and bird-and-flower painting. The album consists of 20 leaves in total, each painting measuring about 36.6 cm wide and 26.7 cm high; the paintings were done in ink on paper and then lightly coloured. Each painting, done on hanji, was mounted on thick, stiff paper, with ten leaves bound into one folio and two folios placed in a case, so that each leaf could be opened and viewed individually. His characteristic style is also well shown in a landscape thought to depict Sainam Rock, one of the Eight Scenic Sites of Danyang: the rocky mountain is shown from close up, filling the entire picture surface to convey its imposing grandeur, while dots and lines of varying density and size are used freely to give the composition a sense of strength and rhythm. Painted in 1796, the 20th year of King Jeongjo, when Kim Hong-do was 51 years old, the album is a valuable source for the study of Danwon's painting style.
