Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBaekheungam is a hermitage belonging to Eunhaesa Temple, said to have been built at the end of the Silla period. When the placenta chamber of King Injong was enshrined at Palgongsan Mountain in 1546, the first year of King Myeongjong of Joseon, Baekheungam was designated the temple's guardian hermitage and extensively renovated. Geungnakjeon Hall, which enshrines the Amitabha Triad symbolising the Western Paradise, was built in 1643, the twenty-first year of King Injo, and the present building has been repaired several times since. It has three bays across the front and three bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms a figure-eight shape when viewed from the side. The bracket structure built up on top of the pillars to support the eaves is found not only above the pillars but also between them, a style known as dapo, whose material forms and joinery closely follow the old techniques of the Joseon period. Inside, the ceiling is raised in the centre and lowered towards the edges to create a stepped effect, and the altar (sumidan) on which the Buddha image sits is so exceptionally and finely carved that it has been separately designated a treasure, the Sumidan of Baekheungam Hermitage of Eunhaesa Temple, Yeongcheon.
