Daeungjeon Hall of Jeonghyesa Temple, Suncheon
순천 정혜사 대웅전 · 順天 定慧寺 大雄殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThere are two accounts of the founding of Jeonghyesa Temple: one holds that it was built by State Preceptor Bojo, and the other by State Preceptor Hyejo, during the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla, but neither can be confirmed with certainty. The temple is also called Gosa, meaning 'old temple', and Daeungjeon Hall is presumed to be a Joseon-period building. It has three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms a figure-eight shape when viewed from the side. The bracket structure built up to support the eaves is found not only above the pillars but also between them, a style known as dapo; the way the members projecting outward curve thickly upward reflects the technique of the early Joseon period. The wooden-plank treatment of the outer walls, together with the building's detailed construction methods, likewise shows early-Joseon features. Inside, the space above the ceiling is concealed by a well-shaped (jeong, 井) coffered ceiling, and although the dancheong, the building's coloured decorative paintwork, has faded, it still preserves the patterns and colours of the early Joseon period. Retaining the dignity of an old building and displaying various styles of Joseon-period wooden architecture, it is regarded as an important structure.
