White Porcelain Lidded Bowl
백자 반합 · 白磁 飯盒

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis white porcelain banhap, a lidded bowl traditionally used for serving rice, is a Joseon-period vessel measuring 22.5 cm in total height, with a lid 9.9 cm high and 17.4 cm in diameter, a mouth 15.3 cm in diameter and a foot 9.4 cm in diameter. A bud-shaped knob sits at the centre of the lid's upper surface, encircled above by two incised lines. The rim of the lid is curved so as to fit closely with the body below. The mouth is drawn in and forms a thick, gently flaring rim before widening gradually, giving the lower body a full, rounded form. Combined with the somewhat tall, outward-flaring foot, this lends the piece an elegant and refined air. The glaze is a white porcelain glaze with a faint bluish tinge, applied thickly over the entire surface and giving off a soft sheen. The outward-projecting energy of the form and its dignified formality are well expressed through the neat shape and full volume of the piece. With its clear white colour tinged with pale blue, this banhap fully embodies the character of the early Joseon period and is one of the representative banhap of the Joseon dynasty.
