White Porcelain Bottle with Inlaid Peony Design
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This white porcelain bottle with an inlaid peony design was made in the early Joseon period; it stands 29.6 cm high, with a mouth 7.4 cm in diameter and a base 9.6 cm in diameter. With its short neck, trumpet-flaring mouth, full body and slightly raised foot, it is a typical liquor bottle of the early Joseon period. Around the neck, two pairs of lines are inlaid in black slip, one pair above and one below, with a simply rendered wave-like scrolling vine pattern set between them. This technique of using black inlay to create designs on white porcelain originated in Goryeo celadon and continued to be used on white porcelain into the fifteenth century. The neck shows some discoloration of the glaze with black spots, and there is a small flaw on the foot. The surface has a greyish-white sheen tinged with pale blue, carrying the soft feel of the Goryeo tradition of inlaid white porcelain. Set against the soft white ground of the porcelain, the simple, bold peony-shaped decoration inlaid in black suits well the full, well-balanced form of the vessel.
