Gilt-bronze Standing Sakyamuni Buddha at Birth
금동탄생불입상 · 金銅誕生佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA birth image of the Buddha depicts Sakyamuni immediately after his birth, when he is said to have taken seven steps and, raising his right hand, proclaimed, "Above the heavens and below the heavens, I alone am to be honoured" (天上天下唯我獨尊). The Gilt-bronze Standing Sakyamuni Buddha at Birth stands upright on a pedestal, its right hand raised toward the sky and its left hand pointing to the earth; it wears a skirt-like garment on the lower body only, with a knotted sash visible at the waist. The pedestal is circular, carved with upward- and downward-facing lotus petals joined together. This pedestal is attached to another, seemingly later, pedestal, giving the piece a highly distinctive appearance. With its unusual pedestal form, and as the only surviving birth image of the Buddha in Korea, it is a valuable object, thought to have been made in the sixth century.
