Jagyeongjeon Hall was built in 1867, when Gyeongbokgung Palace was reconstructed, on the site of Jamidang Hall, for Dowager Consort Jo (Queen Sinjeong), the adoptive mother of Emperor Gojong. After the reconstruction the hall was destroyed by fire, so it was rebuilt in the twenty-fifth year of Emperor Gojong's reign (1888), and stands as it is today. Jagyeongjeon Hall is the residential quarters where the dowager queen carried on her daily life, comprising a total of forty-four kan (bays). To the north-west a bedchamber called Bokandang was placed so that it could stay warm in winter, while the main hall, Jagyeongjeon, occupied the centre. In the south-east a raised pavilion called Cheongyeollu was built so that summer could be spent coolly and comfortably. Dozens of surrounding buildings, walls and gates once stood here, but most were lost during the Japanese colonial period. What remains today are the beautiful flower-patterned walls, into which characters expressing wishes for longevity and the forms of flowers, butterflies and bamboo were fired in clay and set, together with a house-shaped chimney harmoniously carved with the sipjangsaeng, the ten symbols of longevity. Jagyeongjeon is the only dowager queen's residence remaining within Gyeongbokgung Palace, the principal palace of the Joseon dynasty.
