Chimneys in Amisan Garden of Gyeongbokgung Palace
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The chimneys in Amisan Garden at Gyeongbokgung Palace release the smoke that has passed beneath the underfloor heating of Gyotaejeon Hall, the residential quarters of the queen; those standing today were newly built when Gyeongbokgung Palace was reconstructed in the third year of Emperor Gojong's reign (1866). Four chimneys stand here today, their hexagonal walls harmoniously decorated with patterns of vine scrolls, cranes, bats, phoenixes, pines, plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, the fungus of immortality, rocks, birds and deer. Each pattern was formed from fired bricks set in place, with the gaps between them filled with plaster to complete the surface. The decoration brings together the sipjangsaeng, the ten symbols of longevity, the Four Gentlemen plants, patterns symbolising longevity and wealth, and auspicious creatures that ward off fire demons and evil spirits. The upper part of each chimney imitates the form of a timber building, above which small vents were set to let the smoke escape. While faithfully serving their function as chimneys, they display such beautiful patterns and composition that they are regarded as outstanding works of decorative art in the rear garden of the palace.
