Seongnamsa Temple was founded in 680, the twentieth year of King Munmu's reign in Unified Silla, by the eminent monk Seokseon, and was later expanded in the early Goryeo period by State Preceptor Hyegeo. It burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598 and was subsequently rebuilt by the monk Hwadeok. Yeongsanjeon Hall enshrines a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha together with paintings depicting eight scenes from his life. The exact date of its original construction is unknown, but it has been repaired on several occasions; the building standing today dates from the Joseon period. It measures three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a hipped-and-gabled roof. It is built in the dapo style, with decorative bracket clusters set both above the columns and between them; the outward-projecting ends of these members are short and curve slightly downward, a technique commonly found in early Joseon buildings. The hall has a sturdy, well-balanced appearance and, retaining architectural features spanning the early to middle Joseon period, is valued as an important resource for the study of architectural history.
