Sungnimsa Temple was founded in 1345, the first year of King Chungmok of Goryeo. The temple's name is said to commemorate the story of the Chinese monk Bodhidharma, who sat in meditation for nine years at Shaolin Temple on Mount Song. Bogwangjeon Hall of Sungnimsa Temple is thought to have been built before the 17th century. It has a three-bay front and a two-bay side, with a gable roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character 人 when seen from the side. It is built in the dapo style, in which clustered bracket sets supporting the roof eaves are placed both above the columns and between them, though this bracket system was not applied to the side walls of the building. Inside, the ends of the beams are carved with dragon heads, and the structural members set above the columns are decorated respectively with a lotus flower, a dragon's body, and a dragon's forefoot grasping a wish-fulfilling jewel. Distinguished by the conventions and techniques of late-Joseon construction, it is a heritage site valued as a resource for the study of traditional architecture.
