Seonghyeolsa Temple is said to have been founded by the Silla-period monk Uisang. The Nahanjeon Hall of Seonghyeolsa Temple, Yeongju, whose buildings are laid out naturally according to the lie of the land, houses images of nahan (arhats), disciples of the Buddha. It is thought to have been newly built after the Japanese invasions of 1592, and records discovered during repairs in 1984 show that it was first built in 1553, the eighth year of King Myeongjong, and rebuilt in 1634, the twelfth year of King Injo. The building measures 3 bays across the front and 1 bay along the side, with a gabled roof that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. It is built in the dapo style, in which decorative bracket clusters supporting the roof eaves are placed not only above the columns but also between them. The windows of the front doors are carved with decoration, and in particular the central bay shows outstanding carving and craftsmanship depicting fish, crabs, child figures, lotus flowers and birds.
