Daeungjeon Hall of Daebisa Temple, Cheongdo
청도 대비사 대웅전 · 淸道 大悲寺 大雄殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaebisa Temple is said to have been founded in 566, the twenty-seventh year of King Jinheung of Silla, by an unnamed monk of extraordinary spiritual power, and repaired in 600, the twenty-second year of King Jinpyeong, by State Preceptor Wongwang. Before the Goryeo period it stood in the village of Bakgok-ri, but it was moved to its present site during the Goryeo period. Daeungjeon Hall, which enshrines a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, is presumed to have been built around the 16th century. It measures 3 bays across the front and 3 bays along the side, with a gabled roof that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. The overall composition is well organised, and the decorative bracket structure supporting the roof eaves is carefully and sturdily assembled; the form of its individual components shows the building techniques of the early Joseon period, making it a building through which the stylistic characteristics spanning the early to mid-Joseon period can generally be traced.
