Daeungbojeon Hall of Unmunsa Temple, Cheongdo
청도 운문사 대웅보전 · 淸道 雲門寺 大雄寶殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krUnmunsa Temple was founded in the Silla period and has undergone several rounds of repair; the present temple dates from the fourth such repair, carried out in 1718, the 44th year of King Sukjong of Joseon. Daeungbojeon Hall is also presumed to have been built at this time. It measures three bays across the front and three bays at the side, and because the spacing between its columns was set unusually wide, it is larger than buildings of the same nominal scale. The roof is a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof, shaped like the character 八 when viewed from the side. It is built in the dapo style, with clustered bracket sets supporting the roof eaves placed both above the columns and between them, but unlike the typical dapo-style buildings of the late Joseon period, it does not tip over into excessive ornamentation. Doors decorated with floral patterns are fitted along the front, and the wide central bay in particular has a five-panel folding door. Inside, only a single large pillar is set up, creating a broad, open space. The centre of the ceiling is finished as a well-shaped (jeong-字) coffered ceiling, brightly painted in colour. The composition of the building expresses the style of the mid-Joseon period particularly well, making it valuable material for research into the history of Korean architecture.
