KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This pagoda stands on a hill about 150 m northeast of Seokguram Grotto. Its two-tiered foundation (gidan) has an unusual form combining a circular shape with an octagon, and above it a square pagoda body (tapsin) rises in three storeys. The form of the foundation is a highly distinctive example, and its origin remains unknown. Overall, the pagoda is admired for the beautiful harmony of circle, square and octagon, and for the lightness of its detailed craftsmanship; it is presumed to have been made in the late eighth century, during the Unified Silla period.
