Three-story Stone Pagoda in Ma-dong, Gyeongju
경주 마동 삼층석탑 · 慶州 馬洞 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands amid fields on a hill to the northwest of Bulguksa Temple, with a three-storey pagoda body (tapsin) set on a two-tiered foundation (gidan). The lower tier of the foundation is made of four stones and the upper tier of eight. On each tier, pillar shapes are carved in relief, one at each corner and two in the middle. The body stone and roof stone of each of the three storeys are each carved from a single block. The roof stones have five-tiered eaves supports, and holes for hanging bells survive at the four corners and on the underside. With no ornament or carving of any kind, it appears to be one of the plain, neat stone pagodas that were widely popular in the Gyeongsang-do region centred on Gyeongju. It is presumed to date from the latter half of the eighth century, and it is notable for standing very close to Bulguksa Temple.
