Rock-carved Seated Buddha at Yongjangsa Temple Site in Namsan Mountain, Gyeongju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a rock-carved seated Buddha, carved on the rock wall behind the Stone Seated Buddha in Yongjangsagok Valley, Namsan Mountain, Gyeongju (Treasure). The head is covered with small snail-shell-shaped curls of hair, and the full, round face bears a gentle smile. The robe draped over both shoulders is densely covered with a fine pattern of parallel lines. The right hand rests on the knee with the fingertips pointing towards the ground, while the left hand rests on the abdomen. The Buddha sits with both feet raised onto the knees, on a pedestal carved with lotus flowers, and both the head halo and body halo are rendered with two lines. Ten characters are inscribed, though they are still difficult to decipher, and given its good state of preservation, the work is regarded as an excellent piece made in the late 8th century.
