Rock-carved Seated Buddha in Yusin-ri, Boseong
보성 유신리 마애여래좌상 · 寶城 柳新里 磨崖如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha is carved into the northern foot of Jonjesan Mountain, which encircles almost the entire area of Yureo-myeon Township in Boseong County, South Jeolla Province, like a folding screen. It is a rock-carved Buddha, cut in relief on one face of a huge granite boulder. The site is said to be where Jonjesa Temple, built in the Goryeo period, once stood, though no other relics have been found there besides scattered roof-tile fragments. At the centre of the bare head is a topknot-shaped protuberance (yukgye), and the face is round and full, though the nose and mouth are damaged. The round, firm shoulders give an overall impression of stability and compassion. The robe covering both shoulders is draped over the arms to cover the knees; notably, the shoulder area is rendered as though a separate shawl were draped over it, giving the figure a highly distinctive appearance. The two hands are joined at the chest with thumb and index finger touching, a gesture representing the Buddha preaching the dharma. The head halo and body halo are separated by two lines, within which bead-like shapes are carved, while flame patterns are vividly carved along the outer edges of both halos. The pedestal is carved with downward-facing lotus petals at the bottom, pillar and bead shapes in the middle, and upward-facing lotus petals at the top. Overall, this is an outstanding early Goryeo work, stable and soft in feeling yet full of vitality.
