The Lotus Sutra (Myobeopyeonhwagyeong), often called in short the Beophwagyeong, holds as its central teaching that the path to Buddhahood is open to everyone. It is the fundamental scripture of the Cheontae school of Buddhism and, together with the Hwaeomgyeong, another core sutra of Korean Buddhism, greatly influenced the establishment of Buddhist thought in Korea. It is a woodblock print on mulberry paper combining Volumes 5 to 7 of the Lotus Sutra, three volumes in total, into a single book, measuring 34.5 cm in height and 22.3 cm in width. A colophon at the end reveals that it was printed in 1488, the 19th year of King Seongjong, from woodblocks already carved in 1470, to pray for the repose of Princess Sunsuk, daughter of Queen Jeonghyeon, King Seongjong's second consort. It is the same edition as Volumes 6 and 7 of the Lotus Sutra held by the National Museum of Korea, and is a valuable source for examining the Buddhist faith of the early Joseon royal family.
