Kim Il-son’s Geomungo
김일손 거문고 · 金馹孫 琴

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the geomungo used by Kim Il-son, pen name Tagyeong, a scholar of the early Joseon period; it measures 160 cm in length, 19 cm in width, and 10 cm in height. The characters 'Tagyeonggeum' are engraved in the centre of the instrument, and a painting of a crane is depicted on its head. The yongdu, the dragon-shaped head of the instrument, and the unjok, the supports on which the strings are fixed, are preserved in their original form, whereas some parts, such as the bongmi, the tail end, and the gwae, the frets that likewise fix the strings, show signs of recent repair. It is the only instrument of its kind, once treasured as a plaything by scholars of old, to be designated a state-designated cultural heritage.
