The Lotus Sutra, often shortened as such, holds as its central teaching that the path to Buddhahood is open to everyone. As the foundational scripture of the Cheontae school, together with the Avatamsaka Sutra it greatly influenced the establishment of Buddhist thought in Korea. This is Volume 3 of the seven-volume Lotus Sutra, in accordion-fold format, and has come down to us after being taken out from inside a Buddhist statue. The front and back covers were removed when it was placed inside the statue, but the book is otherwise in good condition. It is a woodblock print on mulberry paper, measuring 32.9 cm by 11.0 cm. Because the publication record at the end of the final volume has been lost, the motive, circumstances and exact date of publication cannot be confirmed. However, its main text matches that of the Surangama Sutra (a treasure), which the monk Sinchong carved with great care in 1401, the first year of King Taejong of Joseon, on the order of King Taejo, who was then Grand King Emeritus — suggesting that this volume was published at the same time.
