The Surangama Sutra (大佛頂如來密因修證了義諸菩薩萬行首楞嚴經), often abbreviated as "Daebuljeong Suneungeomgyeong" or simply "Neungeomgyeong," holds as its central idea that the Buddha's teachings should not merely be understood intellectually but experienced and realised directly for oneself. Based on the commentary of the Song-dynasty monk Gyehwan, which explained the text in accessible terms, the translation was begun in 1449, the thirty-first year of King Sejong, by Prince Suyang (later King Sejo) at King Sejong's command, and completed in 1461, the seventh year of King Sejo's reign. It comprises three chapters bound in two volumes, measuring 36.9 cm by 25 cm. The Chinese characters are written large, with small Hangeul glosses attached beside them, followed by the translation set out in two lines. The text was printed using Eulhae type, a typeface modelled on the calligraphy of Gang Hui-an, whose characters are somewhat flat and broad in form. Errors in the main text are corrected in vermilion red. This Eulhae-type printed edition is valuable both for the study of movable type and for its rarity, and, having strongly influenced the translation style and format of texts issued by the Ganggyeongdogam, the state office for translating Buddhist scriptures, it is regarded as an important resource.
